CANONISATION OF BLESSED OSCAR ROMERO - ROME, OCTOBER 2017

Blessed Oscar Romero will be canonised in Rome on Sunday, 14 October 2018. This is a very special time for Holy Cross College, as Oscar Romero is our College patron.

Canonisation is the act of admitting a deceased person into the Canon of Saints in the Catholic Church. This is a significant once in a lifetime occasion in which it would be fitting that Holy Cross College is represented at the event. Therefore, the College Board has agreed to sponsor a small group from Holy Cross College to attend the Canonisation in Rome, Italy.

The trip will take place from 8 – 17 October 2018. The tour will include visiting Rome and also completing a section of the Benedictine Camino in the vicinity of either Subiaco or Montecassino.

The trip will include three students.  Students in Years 10 and 11 interested in attending are requested to complete the Application Form, available on LIFE Support and submit it to the College Principal, via the Principal’s Assistant, by 4pm on Thursday, 2 August 2018.

HIKING THE BIBBULMUN TRACK

It was wonderful to spend today with the Year 6 students hiking on the Bibbulmun Track.  Our walk commenced in Kalamunda, at the beginning of the 1000 kilometre trail, and we walked 9 kilometres through beautiful bushland. We were fortunate to have such lovely weather for our hike and it was pleasing to see the  students rise to the challenge as they climbed up and down hills.  During LIFE Week the Year 6 students will see the terminus of the Bibbulmun Track in Albany and will also walk another section of the trail.

STAFFING

This week we welcomed Mrs Christina Davini and Mrs Jackie Cuff back from Parental Leave.  Mrs DaVini has returned to her role of Frayne House Coordinator.  Thanks to Mrs Laura Billington who took on this role whileMrs Davini was on leave.  Miss Jessie De Leon who did some work at Holy Cross College in Semester One has taken on a part-time contract for Semester 2.

CATHOLIC PERFROMING ARTS FESTIVAL – OPENING MASS

A group of students dramatised the Gospel at today’s Opening Mass for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.  Thanks to Mr McRae and to the students involved for their work in preparing for this celebration for Catholic Schools.  Each year we have a growing number of students involved in the Performing Arts Festival in the various categories of dance, drama and music.

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

This week Junior School students formed the words NAIDOC on the College oval as part of the College’s commemoration of NAIDOC Week.  The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week was Because Of Her, We Can.  It celebrates the essential role that women have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels.

BUILDING PROGRAMME

We are about to commence Stage 6A of our building programme which includes a Wellbeing Facilities and an extension of the staffroom, as well as the construction of additional sports courts.  The construction fence is in place and work will commence very soon..  I appreciate the smooth transition to the changes to access and ask that you remain patient as the build progresses.

END OF TERM

We have reached the end of a very busy term.  In the last few weeks we have had the College production, Kindergarten Pyjama Day, Year One Career Dress-up Day, NEAS Soccer Final, Arts Slam and DaVinci Learning presentations.   At the end of term Assembly we commemorated NAIDOC Week, which will be celebrated in Western Australia during the second week of the school holidays. We will celebrate NAIDOC Week with activities during Week One of term. Thanks to Mr McKern who has created a beautiful cross from the stones the College community painted during the Sorry Day liturgy in May.
I wish all students and their family a restful holiday.  Classes resume on Monday 16 July.
